FMAA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The Challenge for Continuity and Stability

Mission is sustained through the providence of God manifested in the collaboration among missionaries in the frontline and their lay partners. As the mission expands and meets new challenges, a greater need of support from the lay partners become urgent.

It is in this context that Fr. Rommel Cruz, MSP, requested to convene the FMAA General Assembly last May 30, 2015, at the Archdiocesan Nutrition Center, Davao City. The theme of the assembly was, “Continuity and Stability.” There were fifty three (53) participants composed of the leaders and core groups from the eight (8) FMAA units with representatives from the units of Gingoog City and of Camiguin Province.

In his talk, Fr. Rommel emphasized the mission of the Catholic Church in the Philippines to share the gift of faith to the world especially to the peoples of Asia. The Mission Society of the Philippines (MSP) was founded to be in the frontlines of the missionary endeavors of the Philippine Church. This mission is also shared by all the Filipino lay faithful. Thus, the MSP, together with their lay mission partners, go hand in hand in order to pursue effectively the task given to them.

As both Secretary and Bursar General of the MSP, Fr. Rommel brought to our attention, that the annual collection from all the dioceses in the Philippines through the Filipino Mission Sunday, is not sufficient for the formation of its future missionaries, and of the on-going formation of missionary priests. Thus, there is a need to find pledgors and benefactors to help sustain MSP’s missionary activities.

Moreover, Fr. Rommel reiterated, the need for the continuing formation of the Filipino Mission Auxiliary Association (FMAA), as active lay mission partners of the MSP. This is to nourish their spiritual life, and strengthen their morale. In so doing, the FMAA’s are able to support the mission, by means of regular prayers for the missionary priests, getting in touch with prayer partners, finding recruits and regular pledgors to help in the financial needs of MSP.

Fr. Rommel urged everyone to explain the distributed solicitation letters to the prospective donors, and provide them an official receipt or acknowledgement letter.  He added, as an expression of gratitude, a day would be scheduled for a special mass for the donors/pledgors.  Fr. Rommel reminded the participants, the importance of carving trust and maintaining rapport with the donors/pledgors, by providing them the result of the financial campaign, updating them about MSP; by giving them Banaag magazine or MSP calendars. He likewise announced an annual gathering for FMAA friends and supporters.

The plan to pursue continuity and promote stability of the Mission Center in Mindanao is necessary and urgent, considering the current financial situation of the MSP. But with commitment and dedication of each FMAA member and guidance of the Holy Spirit, our firm belief in God’s abiding providence and the intercession of the Blessed Mother, yes, we can make it!
